Open Mesh Lace (multiple of 3 stitches plus one):

Row 1 (RS): *Purl 1, ssk, yo; rep from * to final stitch, knit 1.

Rows 2 and 4 (WS): Purl 1, *purl 2, knit 1; rep from * to end.

Row 3 (RS): *Purl 1, yo, k2tog; rep from * to final stitch, knit 1.

Repeat rows 1 - 4.

If you're working on a stitch count that isn't a multiple of 3 stitches plus 1, here are the instructions:

• A multiple of 3 stitches, remove the Stockinette selvedge stitch at the end of RS rows. (In the chart, eliminate "stitch 4".
• A multiple of 3 stitches plus 2, work an additional "knit one" at the beginning of all RS rows, and an additional "purl one" at the end of all WS rows.

If you use Open Mesh Lace to trim a neckline, you may wish to work decreases to ensure your neck edge doesn't flare. I've included optional charts for such decreases, as inspiration. Please feel free to disregard the optional charts if you so choose.

Open Mesh Lace works best as a cardigan trim when the cardigan has no buttons. If using Open Mesh Lace on a cardigan with buttons, either place the eyelet buttonholes within a final Garter Stitch edge, or work traditional cast-on, bind-off buttonholes.
